 FAQ's

How is MSL /OG different to what my child learns at school?

At LAB Learning Clinic we offer intensive therapy sessions to help your child unlock their learning potential. We offer small group sessions or one-on-one intensive sessions. This ensures a student works at their own pace and difficulties are addressed at the time of instruction. Students have various strengths and weaknesses and often work at varying paces. In a class of 25-30 students it is sometimes difficult to ensure all students have grasped new skills.

In a classroom environment a teacher juggles classroom management, teaching and other outside influences, therefore teaching time can be greatly decreased. At LAB Learning Clinic all our therapists are trained teachers and our small class sizes of one to a maximum of four ensure therapy sessions are targeted to your child's needs.

What is the duration of each session?
Each session runs for 45-50 minutes. The last few minutes are spent speaking to parents about progress, the session or any recommended homework tasks.

How long will my child need to attend LAB Learning Clinic?
Your child will be assessed on a regular basis to monitoring progress. Every child is different and so are their needs. Some children attend sessions for one term, others need a couple of terms or longer.

What if my child misses a session?
LAB Learning Clinic  sessions run on a termly basis where ten sessions are booked in advance. At least 24 hours is required if your child is absent from a session. If your child is sick or injured please notify as soon as possible to let our qualified therapist know. Sessions will be charged for that day and each student is offered one catch-up session per term.

What age can my child start at LAB Learning clinic?
At LAB Learning Clinic we work with students from  4 years to adult in prevention and intervention sessions. We believe in early intervention. If your child is not reaching grade expectations, or you believe they are not progressing with reading or writing skills, make an appointment for an assessment.

What if my child is not dyslexic or does not have a learning difficulty?
MSL /OG can aid all students to read, spell and write using evidence based pedagogy. All children benefit from instruction that targets the 5 components of reading (Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, Comprehension) in a direct structured way.

How much does it cost?
Price varies depending on the following factors:
  • One-on-one or small group
  • Frequency/week and location
  • Session Duration

Do you offer spelling booster sessions? My child has difficulty with spelling. He/She seems to learn his/her spelling words perfectly for the weekly spelling test and then can't remember them a couple of weeks later. Can you help with this?
Yes at LAB Learning Clinic our therapy sessions teach children to read and spell phonetically. We teach children the rules and patterns associated with the English Language to improve spelling and understanding of the English Language.

Using activities such as look, cover, write, check and other activities is a whole language approach, commonly used to remember weekly spelling tests (where children are asked to learn words by remembering the whole word). Children learn these words for the weekly spelling test. However, this fails to move into long term memory, resulting in some students not being able to remember how to spell these words long term. At LAB Learning Clinic we teach your child to spell and decode phonetically.

Do I stay with my child?

Many of our therapy sessions take place at school (after permission is gained with the school and parents). If your child attends one of our offices; parents are permitted to stay in one-on-one sessions or feel free to come back after the session once your child is finished.

My child suffers from anxiety and low confidence is this OK?
Unfortunately many of our students suffer from anxiety or low confidence due to many years of struggling with a learning difficulty/disability. At LAB Learning Clinic we make learning fun and engaging. New skills are taught directly and explicitly. Throughout the lesson students are encouraged to move or play games to cement skills learned. We find this helps to break down barriers associated with learning literacy and students love coming to see us.
